The UMFNE Board of Directors, the Grants & Financial Assistance Committee, along with staff, implemented the development of the new Grants & Financial Assistance Ministry. With a goal of distributing $8,000 in 2009 through the New England Conference Districts, announcements were communicated with the eight Districts, District Superintendents and the Annual Conference at its session in June.
In 2001, the G. Neil Harper Grants & Financial Assistance Endowment Fund was established by the Foundation, at its Tenth Year Anniversary, to honor Mr. Neil Harper, who served as Board Chairperson since its inception. Income from this Endowment will sustain and support future grants.
Inquiries by prospective
applicants include a variety of opportunities and needs such as: 
w scholarship support for programs providing care and tutoring for children
w help reducing building debt and building congregational stewardship
w assistance in developing local funding networks for outreach ministries
w training for debt counselors
First 2009 Award Recipient
The United Methodist Foundation of New England and the United Methodist Economic Ministry, Salem, ME,
partnered to work together on ministry and financial development. A $2,000 grant was awarded that will support
staff leadership and develop a Crafter's Guild to help expand the skill development opportunities offered to the
community. This new ministry will bring local people together to learn handcrafts, share resources and talent,
