2023 SPI SPEAKER BIOS


BISHOP CYNTHIA MOORE-KOIKOI / January 18 & 19

     Bishop Moore-Koikoi was elected bishop of The United Methodist Church in July 2016 and began her assignment in the Pittsburgh Area on September 1 of that year.

     She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Loyola College in Maryland, and a Masters of Arts and advanced certification in school psychology from the University of Maryland. She worked as a school psychologist for Anne Arundel County Public Schools for 17 years before answering her call to ordained ministry.

     Bishop Moore-Koikoi then completed her Master of Divinity degree at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC, in 2007. She served as pastor of a small church in East Baltimore and as associate pastor at Calvary UMC, a large congregation in Annapolis.

     Ordained an elder in 2010, she served on the staff and as district superintendent of the Baltimore-Washington Conference.  She was serving as superintendent of the Baltimore Metropolitan District when elected a Bishop.  

     Bishop Moore-Koikoi is married to Reverend Raphael Koikoi, a pastor in the United Methodist Church.  She enjoys travel, music of all kinds (singing and playing), sewing, and cycling. 


REV. MOONYOUNG LEE / February 15 & 16

     The Reverend Moonyoung Lee is a member of the California-Pacific Annual Conference and has pastored Wayside, St. Paul’s and Wilshire United Methodist Churches prior to her current appointment as the District Superintendent of Hawaii. She describes herself as a storyteller who is commissioned to share the story of God’s amazing grace and love in Christ Jesus. Consequently, her passion for ministry lies in areas of preaching, teaching, and spiritual growth. 

     Over the years, Rev. Lee has served the connection in various ways: a mentor to GBHEM’s The Journey Toward Ordained Ministry, a program for racial-ethnic students seeking ordination in the United Methodist Church. An executive team member of the National Federation of Asian-American United Methodists, and lastly, as the General Commission on Religion and Race (GCORR) 2020 Facing the Future design team member.  

     In her personal life, she is a self-proclaimed travelholic and confesses to being bitten by a travel bug quite some time ago. Moonyoung hopes to see all seven wonders of the world and treasures every opportunity that comes her way to satisfy her wanderlust.    


REV. MAGREY DEVEGA / March 15 & 16

The Rev. Magrey R. deVega is the Senior Pastor of Hyde Park United Methodist Church and is the author of ten books, including The Bible Year: A Journey through Scripture in 365 Days, Embracing the Uncertain: A Lenten Study for Unsteady Times, and the forthcoming Questions Jesus Asked: A Six-Week Study in the Gospels. He has been a featured speaker around the country, including twice at the Leadership Institute at Church of the Resurrection in Kansas City, Missouri. 


REV. DR. JOE DANIELS / April 19 & 20

     Dr. Joseph W. Daniels, Jr. is a husband, father, pastor, author, prophetic imaginer, and leader of a Relevant, Enthusiastic, Authentic and Loving church movement.  Joe has dedicated his life to growing the kingdom of God. For the past 27 years, he has done so as the lead pastor of the Emory United Methodist Church in Washington, D.C. including three years (July 2013 to June 2016), as lead pastor of Emory and the District Superintendent of the Greater Washington District of the Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church. 

   Emory Fellowship is currently engaged in a $56 million, 99-unit affordable rental housing, commercial and congregational development project to provide hope to those desperately needing an affordable place to live in one of the top five most expensive regions in the country.   

    Joe teaches at Wesley Theological Seminary in both the Urban Ministry and Practice of Ministry and Mission programs and has authored four books.
